Midwifery Service Directory in England and United Kingdom

‘Carmenta’ is known in Ancient Roman Mythology & Religion as a Goddess of Childbirth and prophecy, as well as the protector of Mothers and their children.  She is also a Patron of Midwives and as an aside – innovation!  This captured my emotions and imagination and inspired me – it really is the perfect name for what I am trying to achieve.

I am a Registered Midwife and graduated with a BSc in Midwifery from the University of West London in 2016.  Going straight into hospital practice I consolidated my skills completing a year preceptorship and working in multi-disciplinary teams.  I have worked in all clinical environments, Community Practice and Safeguarding before settling into Postnatal Care.  It gives me great pleasure to support women and their partners on their journey into parenthood.

During my time in practice, I have met women who have suffered both physical and emotional birth trauma and found that postnatal pathways are not adequate to support them.  Heartbreakingly, I’ve looked after women who have suffered life changing injuries which have not even been explained to them.  Approximately 6% of women (thought to be largely under-reported) are formally diagnosed with PTSD following a traumatic birth and around ? of women describe their birth as ‘traumatic’.  Birth Trauma is often mis-diagnosed as postnatal depression, which means in many cases women are left to suffer in silence, many choose not to have another child, relationships breakdown due to the destructive nature of symptoms. I was so shocked and saddened that these findings led me to study the subject further and subsequently complete a Birth Trauma Resolution Course (accredited by the Royal College of Midwives).

I am trained in a number of holisitic techniques including guided imagery, deep relaxation, breathing and the innovative “Rewind Technique”; The treatments and trauma resolution serve to remove the emotional tag from memory, allowing the sufferer to think and talk through their experience in a calm and rational manner without triggering a panic response.  The treatments also promote feelings of calmness, confidence and wellbeing.

I am passionate about helping women and their families recover from such an ordeal, empowering and supporting women (and in some cases their partners) to regulate their nervous systems, rebuild strength and confidence and enable them to seek a positive way forward in their parenting journey.
